ASTM F392
ASTM F392 is a standardized testing method designed to assess the durability and barrier integrity of flexible packaging materials under repeated flexing conditions. This test is essential for industries that rely on high-performance flexible packaging, such as food, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

ASTM F392 - Gelbo Flex Test Method
De Gelbo Flex Test is the primary technique used in ASTM F392. It involves repeatedly twisting and compressing the flexible material to simulate real-world mechanical stress. This test helps manufacturers evaluate how well a material maintains its mechanical strength and barrier properties after prolonged flexing.
Test Procedure
- Specimen Preparation: The material is cut into 200 mm × 280 mm sheets.
- Mounting on the Flex Durability Tester: The sample is attached to two rotating mandrels.
- Flexing Process: The specimen undergoes a series of twisting and crushing motions at a rate of 45 cycles per minute.
- Evaluation: The material is tested for flex-induced pinholes, barrier degradation, and structural failures.
Testing Conditions and Classifications
The ASTM F392 test is performed under standardized atmospheric conditions (23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5% relative humidity) and offers different conditioning levels:
Condition A: 1 hour (2700 cycles)
Condition B: 20 minutes (900 cycles)
Condition C: 6 minutes (270 cycles)
Condition D: 20 cycles
Condition E: 20 cycles (partial flexing)
Conditioning levels A, B, and C assess flex resistance, while D and E evaluate barrier performance under minimal flexing.
This test provides crucial data on:
Pinhole formation and flex failure
Barrier integrity for moisture and gas transmission
Suitability of flexible packaging for high-stress environments
By incorporating ASTM F392 testing, manufacturers can ensure their packaging materials meet industry standards for durability and performance, reducing the risk of product contamination or failure.
